Research from Collective X reveals that over 118,000 digital roles remain unfilled across the country, with more than 41,000, or 36%, of these suited to junior professionals. Contrary to the perception that entry-level roles are vanishing due to automation, the data shows strong and growing demand for junior talent in roles like software development, business analysis, IT support, cybersecurity and systems administration.
The report also highlights how AI is reshaping, not replacing, the world of work. While AI and automation are changing the nature of many roles, they’re also creating demand for new digital skills. Employers are increasingly looking for staff who can work alongside AI tools, interpret data, and adapt quickly in tech-enabled environments. This makes foundational digital fluency, problem-solving, and applied learning more important than ever for early-career talent.
The results from this report highlight both the potential and the challenges for absorbing young people into South Africa’s digital jobs.
There has never been a better time than the present to develop these new skills and competencies in our young people if we are to reap a digital employment dividend. But realising the opportunities requires a coordinated ecosystem approach involving employers, training providers and other skilling institutions, government, and financing systems.
