Evan Jones, CEO of The Collective X, discussed the critical skills gap in South Africa’s digital sector with Tumisang Ndlovu on Newzroom Afrika. Despite the availability of 14,000 entry-level jobs for the youth, South Africa faces a supply-side problem due to a lack of appropriate digital skills. This skills shortage has led to 70% of businesses outsourcing digital jobs, resulting in a loss of R10 billion annually.
Jones highlighted that South Africa is producing only 20,000 digital skills annually, many of which do not meet business needs, causing a scarcity and driving up labour costs. However, he views this crisis as an opportunity for South Africa.
To address this, business and government have collaborated to create The Collective X, a non-profit organisation focused on coordinating efforts to resolve the skills gap. The organisation aims to double the national output of in-demand digital skills over the next 36 months by developing 10,000 new professionals. The Collective X focuses on driving a unified plan, scaling necessary skills, and developing innovative funding solutions through the Digital Skills Fund, which aggregates investments from businesses, government, and donors.
Jones emphasised the importance of work-integrated learning for youth to improve their job prospects. He encouraged young people to utilise career sites, certification programs, and platforms like SA Youth to access these opportunities.
